FAUTHEREE, HUEY P RA25530612 (SSAN XXX-XX-XXXX), MASTER SERGEANT,
Headquarters and Headquarters, Company, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry, 11th
Infantry Brigade APO 96217
Awarded: Silver Star
Date action: 5 February 1969
Theater:  Republic of Vietnam

Reason: For gallantry in action against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Master Sergeant Fautheree distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 5 February 1969 while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry. On that date, the battalion command and control helicopter was enroute to Landing Zone Cork from Quang Ngai when it came under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. When the aircraft was forced to make a landing, Sergeant Fautheree immediately began to place suppresive fire on the enemy while the remainder of the crew and passengers disembarked. Despite the enemy fire, he destroyed one of the enemy positions and removed the battalion commander's radio from the downed aircraft. As a rescue helicopter arrived, Sergeant Fautheree continued to fire at the enemy while his fellow soldiers boarded the aircraft. Master Sergeant Fautheree's personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
Authority:   By direction of the President under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918.
