1. TC 320. The following AWARD is announced.
LAWING, JOEL D., US52-XXX-XXX (SSAN xxx-xx-xxxx), PRIVATE FIRST CLASS,
Company D, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade APO 96217,
Awarded: Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device
Date action: 20 December 1968
Theater: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: | For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Lawing distinguished himself by valorous actions on 20 December 1968 while serving with the first platoon of Company D, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade. On that date, the company was conducting a search and clear operation in the mountainous terrain west of the village of Mo Duc. While making a sweep through the area, the third platoon made contact with the defensive perimeter of a battalion size North Vietnamese Army base camp. Positioned in fortified emplacements, the insurgents placed heavy volumes of suppressive fire on the platoon inflicting numerous casualties and pinning down much of the element. Disregarding the hostile fire, Private Lawing maneuvered to a vantage point and engaged the insurgents. Placing heavy volumes of suppressive fire on the insurgents, he aided his comrades in gaining fire superiority which led to the penetration of the insurgent's defenses. Through his timely actions, he contributed greatly to the success of the operation and the subsequent defeat of the enemy. Private First Class Lawing's personal heroism and evotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army. |
