The Remains of the Fray

by John A. "Jiggs" Caudron, C-3/1, 11th LIB, Americal Divison (4/68-4/69)

The govmint has gathered
this raw mix of boys
and force-fit them together
for one of their ploys:
they're sent to Gehenna
by leg or in craft
and made to stand boldly and never turn aft.

Their return is forbidden
to the life whence they came.
Some cross back o'er the Styx,
while the others remain.
In spite of harsh dealings
and plied upon harms,
their wretched salvation:
they are brothers-in-arms.
