Obituary

Leslie J. Stottle

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Leslie J. Stottle age 71 of Honey Grove, Pa died March 18, 2002.

He was the son of Leslie J. and Lucy Edleen (Brower) Stottle of Elmira, New York.  He was a Graduate of Alfred University, University of Nebraska at Omaha and held Masters degrees from Shippensburg and Georgetown University.

Col. Stottle was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars where he was a Company commander in the 223rd Infantry Regiment, 40th Inf. Division in Korea and a Battalion XO and Battalion Commander in the 1st Cavalry Division and also commanded the 3rd Battalion 1st Infantry in the Americal Division.  He held various Staff positions throughout his career.  He was stationed in Berlin when the Wall was erected and involved later in the development of the Air Assault Division.

He was awarded many military awards including the Legion of Merit w /Oak Leaf, Meritorious Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze star Medal with V devise with three Oak leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Air Medal with 16 awards, Army Commendation Medal with V devise with 4 oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service medal w/ Oak leaf Cluster, Army of Occupation Medal (Berlin), Armed Forces Expedition Medal Berlin, Korean Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Silver Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm 2nd Award,Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, General Staff Identification Badge, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Senior Parachute Wings and Air Assault Badge.

After his retirement he and his wife operated a Angus Seed Stock operation and later a Beef Stocker operation.  He sold real Estate for Vlasek Real Estate in Camp Hill.  He was a member of the Juniata County Extension Board, Regional and State Extension Boards.  He was a Member of the Lakestreet Presbyterian Church in Elmira NY, The Retired Officer Association, US Army Association, the U.S. ARMY WAR COLLEGE Alumni Assoc., Fort Benning Lodge 579, F&AM, Fort Benning # 73 R.A.M., Valley of Harrisburg Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32., National Sojourners, Carlisle Chapter #130 and other military organizations.

He is survived by his wife Eunice M (Mickey) Stottle whom he married in 1952 in Owensboro KY, sons, Leslie J. Stottle III of New Cumberland PA, Robert W. Stottle of Lemoyne, PA, Alex D. Stottle of Mifflintown, PA.  One grandson, Gregory James Stottle.

He was preceded in death by his only sister, Natalie Ann Whitmire in 1979 in Houston TX.  Funeral arrangements to be handled by Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, Pa. 717-734-3721.  Viewing will be Thursday March 21, 2002 from 12:00 noon till 8:00 PM, services to follow viewing.

Internment will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 1:00 o’clock PM on Friday March 22, 2002.
