Virtual Tour

A "Jump" into the Mountains with D Battery, 6th Battalion, 11th Artillery

In March of 1970, D Battery went on a "Jump" into the mountains west of FSB Hill 4-11.  A "Jump" is when an artillery battery takes their guns and ammo to setup a temporary base to provide artillery support for the infantry companies, when they are out of the normal firing range of the artillery unit that supports them.

The location of this "Jump" was called Landing Zone (LZ) Irma.  It was the first "Jump" that Terry participated in.

This "Virtual Tour" of a "Jump" with D Battery was provided by Terry Copt, artillery gunner, who was with D Battery from November, 1969 to December, 1970.

This is how D Battery was transported to LZ Irma.  The Chinook helicopter picked up the personnel first, and then the gun and ammo were hooked to it.
