After LT William Calley was convicted for his part in the My Lai incident, the division's name reverted back to its original name from the beginning of WWII.

After landing in Chu Lai, the next stop for everyone was the Combat Center. Here, you can see the Combat Center along the shores of the South China Sea. The barracks are the collection of buildings in the center. Everyone spent most of their first week with the Americal Division at the Combat Center learning Vietnamese customs, mines and booby traps, tactics, and finishing their in-country processing.

Along the beach road to the Combat Center was another sign that said, "Welcome To The Americal Division Combat Center." On the reverse side it read, "Under The Southern Cross," the division's slogan from its early days in WWII when the division fought in the South Pacific.

From the center of the Combat Center, looking towards the beach you can see the barracks on the right and the "theater" on the left.
