Along the road, the Vietnamese farmers worked in their fields and rice paddies.

After the harvest, the farmers would dry their rice on the highway, making a narrow road even more narrow.  To keep the traffic from running over their rice, the farmers would put large rocks, logs, and even dud rounds around the rice.

As the convoy approached Quang Ngai from the south, we passed through the town of Mo Duc, which had seen many battles.  The Shell station there had been shot up many times and was never functional.  Because the gas stations were always empty, the locals bought their gasoline from roadside vendors who sold gas in one liter bottles.

North of Mo Duc was the main bridge leading into Quang Ngai.  Here, you can see some of the sand-bagged defensive positions the ARVNs used at night to protect the bridge.
